The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot (2:2) says “Rabban Gamliel, the son of Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi says: Excellent is Torah study together with worldly pursuit, for engagement in both causes sin to be forgotten.”
(1) In your own words, how, in fact, do Torah study and worldly pursuit compliment each other and lead to the forgetting of sin? Why are both needed? Include sources (Torah or secular) or personal anecdotes to support your answer.
(2) Describe a personal role model (family member, teacher, community leader, celebrity, etc.) that exemplifies the successful integration of Torah and worldly pursuit as quoted above. What about them embodies the message of this Mishnah? How do you see yourself relating to this Mishnah in your life?
