Learn to read from the Torah, one trope at a time

Whether you're preparing for a bar mitzvah, learning to layn a parsha for the first time, or sharpening skills you haven't used in years, the Torah Tech Kriya Trainer turns the cantillation marks into something you can actually drill. Pick a verse, identify the trope, and build muscle memory for the symbols that have guided Jewish reading for over a thousand years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is trope (ta'amei hamikra)?

Trope, or ta'amei hamikra, is the system of cantillation marks placed above and below the letters of the Hebrew Bible. Each mark tells the reader two things at once: a melody, and a function (whether the word ends a phrase, leads into another, or pauses lightly). Without trope, the Torah reads as letters and vowels. With trope, it sings.

How long does it take to learn Torah reading?

Most students can recognize all the trope marks within a few weeks of consistent daily practice. Reading a full aliyah aloud, with proper melodies, takes a few months. The drills here cover the recognition half. For the melodies, work alongside a teacher, a recording, or a baal koreh from your community.

Do I need to sign up to use this trope game?

No. The game is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. Your streak, accuracy, and progress are saved on your device. Optional sign-in for syncing across phones and laptops is planned for a future release.

Which tradition does this teach?

Version 1 uses the Ashkenazi names and conventions: Etnachta, Zakef Katan, Mercha, and so on. The trope symbols themselves are universal; the melodies and a handful of names differ in Sephardi, Yemenite, and Italian traditions. A tradition selector is planned for phase 2.

Where does the Hebrew text come from?

The Hebrew text with full cantillation is pulled from the open Sefaria library, drawing on the Miqra according to the Mesorah edition. Torah Tech is independent of and not affiliated with Sefaria.

Is this useful for bar mitzvah practice?

Yes. The Aliyah Drill mode lets you pick any aliyah from this week's parsha and practice identifying its trope marks one pasuk at a time. Pair it with your teacher, your tutor, or a recorded leyning to lock in the melodies.

Will Haftarah be added?

Yes. Haftarah uses the same symbols but a different set of melodies. Once the Torah trainer is stable, Haftarah will be added as a second track with its own daily and weekly drills.
